What Size Patio Umbrella Should I Buy?
When it comes to the size of a patio umbrella, it can always be tempting to buy the biggest unit available. While this is a great idea in theory, in reality, this may not be the best option for you and your outdoor area.
There are a number of factors to consider when trying to decide what size patio umbrella is right.
Factor #1- buy what fits your space.
If you are looking for an umbrella that covers as much of your outdoor area as possible, then, of course, opt for the largest umbrella available. But if you have a small patio, you need to measure your space to find an umbrella that fits. There would be nothing worse than buying an umbrella that does not even fit into the space you envisioned it going.
Factor #2- shop with purpose.
You also need to consider the purpose of this umbrella. Are you looking for something that is relatively portable, such as a canopy to provide shade for a single pool lounger, or a chair on your patio, without being too overwhelming? If this is the case, bigger may not necessarily mean better. You do not want to overpower the space with an umbrella that feels too big for its’ purpose. Sometimes a smaller umbrella is all you need in terms of practicality, and it can still create the perfect finishing touch to your garden.
Factor #3- shape matters!
The shape of the umbrella can also affect the size of the canopy that you might want to buy. Many umbrellas are circular (or octagonal), but square canopies are becoming more and more common. The different shape means that you might be able to squeeze in a little more shade and coverage with a smaller square canopy, compared to a larger, circular canopy. This is a great economic alternative that still provides you with adequate protection from the elements. The bold square shape can also add some personality to your outdoor space, especially if it is created in a bold color.
Factor #4- tilted for shade.
Consider investing in a tilted umbrella, if you are worried that a smaller canopy won’t provide enough shade. Tilted umbrellas are just what they sound like - the canopy can be tilted to suit your needs, to block out as much wind and shade as possible. This way, you can directly angle the canopy where you need it, and you do not need such a large surface area to block out the sun.
But, if you are looking for an umbrella with a canopy to cover a large surface area, then definitely go ahead and buy a bigger model. If you have the space and the need for it, larger umbrellas can be great! It is all about finding what works for your outdoor space, and your personal taste.
